Tom is a La Crosse resident with a special interest in natural history and outdoor activities, and he began his MVC board membership in late 2010 and serves on the board governance committee. With a B.A. from Carleton College, a Master of Divinity, S.T.M. from the Yale Divinity School, and a J.D. from the University of Connecticut, and a current interest in nature photography, Tom brings several useful strengths to the MVC board. His master’s thesis at Yale dealt with the theological dimensions of natural resource preservation. As an attorney, he represented families, children, and people with disabilities. He now works part time as a case manager for the YWCA/CASA for Kids (Court Appointed Special Advocate) where he trains and supervises volunteers working with children in the child protection court system. Tom quit practicing several years ago and has been expanding his outdoor and photography activities.
Tom has served on the boards of the Wisconsin Association of Mediators (8 years) and Disability Rights Wisconsin (6 years), and has trained new board members on non-profit structures, board member ethics, and mission-driven programming for a number of non-profit organizations.
Tom’s photographs formed the basis of the 2010 Myrick Hixon EcoPark calendar and he is assisting with the editing of the 2011 calendar. He also does advertising photography for artists and design cards and other media, and is working on photo essays of unique places such as the Holland Sand Prairie. The MVC is pleased to welcome Tom to its board membership.
