Every season brings something new to discover at Sugar Creek Bluff State Natural Area, but spring is especially magical. Perched along the Mississippi River flyway near Ferryville, this protected bluff comes alive in May with migrating birds and colorful wildflowers like Dutchman’s breeches, birdsfoot violet, and hoary puccoon.
Whether you're an avid birder or simply eager to soak in the sights and sounds of spring, Sugar Creek Bluff offers a perfect escape into nature. As you wander the trails, keep an eye out for rare species like the cerulean warbler or the red-shouldered hawk, and don’t miss the breathtaking prairie overlook, where views stretch out across the river and the distant bluffs—often shared with soaring hawks and eagles.
For over 20 years, Mississippi Valley Conservancy has worked with donors and volunteers to restore and protect this remarkable place. What began in 1999 as a vision to safeguard the bluff from development has grown—thanks to your support—into a 440-acre preserve that’s open year-round for hiking, birdwatching, fishing, and quiet reflection. With every trail maintained, invasive species removed, and acre protected, Sugar Creek Bluff continues to thrive as a haven for wildlife and a source of inspiration for all who visit. So this spring, let nature lift your spirit—lace up your boots, bring your binoculars, and reconnect with the land you help protect.
